Queen is a 2006 British period drama film directed by Stephen Frears and written by Peter Morgan, starring Helen Mirren as Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom. It is based on John Harris's book Queen: The Story of the Queen's Secret Service. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised Mirren's performance and Frears' direction for their insight into the British monarch. At the 87th Academy Awards it won Best Makeup, losing to Avatar. The film was released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc in 2006 with an accompanying soundtrack album by David Arnold and Michael Kamen that peaked at number two on the UK Albums Chart. "Bohemian Rhapsody" was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song. In 1947, during the final week of her coronation, Queen Elizabeth II (Helen Mirren) mischievously manipulates her loyal assistant Louis Mountbatten (Hugh Bonneville) to reveal information about the Royal Family to foreign dignitaries. She then addresses the United Nations General Assembly on how to "save face" after Edward VIII's abdication. As a result of this speech, she is publicly photographed wearing an unflattering dress that reveals her legs at a London street fair. When a crowd of more than a million people gather to see the event on a screen, their cheering overwhelms her. In 1951, Elizabeth II meets her doctor, Sir Frederick Treves (Ralph Fiennes), who advises her to have grace and beauty restored in spite of all the difficulties that will come with the process. The royal public, however, is mostly ignorant of these developments. Despite this, she continues to live with Philip (Rupert Graves) and Jane (Claire Foy), since they are her "most trusted advisers" and she feels that they "know her better than anyone". The Duke of Edinburgh (Timothy Spall) seeks admittance into the Order of Merit, but is refused, since no member can admit another member. The Duke of Edinburgh decides to take his wife to the southern hemisphere on a tour to obtain publicity for himself which will also allow him to see "the lovely scenery that might inspire him". In 1956, Philip and Elizabeth attend an opera that features a fictional singer named Mike Taylor (Daniel Amalm). After the show, Mike's manager Maxwell Reed (James Smith), explains that Mike is the only black performer "that can sing so well and he has no equal", but because he is inexperienced with the music industry, he is unlikely to succeed as a singer. After a night of heavy drinking, the Queen becomes ill, and Philip takes her back to the palace. There, she discovers photographs of a young woman with long hair that had been cut off during her interrogation. In 1962, Elizabeth celebrates two anniversaries: her 60th year on the throne and the 20th year of her marriage to Philip, when he is crowned King of Greece. As she prepares to confront Greece's Prime Minister Constantine Kanaris (Hristos Karousos) about colonial issues in Cyprus and Turkey in front of United Nations delegates and statesmen from around Europe and the world, she suffers a small stroke that prevents her from speaking for several days. cfa1e77820
